Washington State is home to various stunning destinations worth exploring. There is something for everyone, from picturesque national parks to charming coastal towns. This guide will highlight Washington's top 5 must-see destinations, ensuring you make the most of your trip to this beautiful state.
Seattle
The vibrant city of Seattle is Peace Vans’ home base and is known for its beautiful scenery, iconic landmarks, and excellent restaurants. Head to Macrina Bakery & Café in the morning for a delicious latte and pastry. After breakfast, drive just a few blocks to Peace Vans, where you can chat with our team and see our Metris van production or Vanagon restoration facilities. Next, we recommend sightseeing and visiting our city's “touristy” destinations. Check out Pike Place Market, the Space Needle, and the Seattle Aquarium. REI’s flagship store is also downtown, and we highly recommend stocking up on camping supplies there before hitting the other spots on this list. After a day of adventuring around the city, check out one of our favorite local restaurants or bars: Marination, JarrBar, Sugo Hand Roll, or Spinasse.
Leavenworth
Leavenworth is a charming Bavarian-inspired village nestled in the Cascade Mountains. This town offers a unique experience, as it feels like you’re on a European vacation (but you don’t have to leave the US!). There are plenty of things to do in town and in nature. When in town, meader down Front Street and check out all the excellent shops. Grab a bite at Prusik Kitchen + Bar, a new restaurant offering a unique menu with coconut ravioli and halibut nuggets. Then, head to Icicle Brewing Company for a craft beverage.
If you’re looking for outdoor recreation, Leavenworth has plenty to offer. One of the most popular trails in the Pacific Northwest is just 13 miles away: Colchuck Lake. With a length of 8.7 miles and an elevation gain of 2,342 feet, this hike is not for the faint of heart–however, we highly recommend it due to the stunning turquoise lake you reach at the top. If you’re looking for more laid-back activity, we recommend renting some tubes and floating the Wenatchee River in downtown Leavenworth.
This town is also known for its various seasonal activities. Oktoberfest is in the fall, attracting visitors from all over the country. Vibrant lights and decorations fill Front Street during winter, and a reindeer farm opens down the road. This town is packed full of activities for every season and age group.
San Juan Islands
The San Juan Islands are a captivating archipelago that showcases nature's beauty and offers visitors a tranquil escape. Comprised of over 170 islands, they provide a picturesque setting with lush forests, idyllic beaches, and breathtaking views of the surrounding waters. The two most popular islands are Orcas Island and San Juan Island, accessed via ferry. Located on the latter, Friday Harbor is one of our favorite destinations in the state, as it offers so much to do despite being a quaint town. It features two markets, bakeries, restaurants, brewpubs, bars, and outdoor activities. We highly recommend renting a kayak from Outdoor Odysseys and hitting the water, where you may spot whales, seals, and more.
If you go to Orcas Island, walk around Eastsound and check out the hip shops and restaurants. Our favorites include Mijitas Mexican Kitchen and The Inn at Ship Bay. Finally, head to Moran State Park and hike Mount Consitution, which offers stunning views of the entire archipelago.
Mount Rainier
Home to Washington's tallest peak at 14,411 feet, a trip to Mount Rainier National Park is a must. Explore the area’s wild rivers, lush forests, rushing waterfalls, alpine lakes, sweeping views, and tasty restaurants. Stop at The Carlson Block in Wilkeson for delicious food on your way to the park.
Mount Rainier is known for its incredible hiking trails catering to different skill levels. While in the park, we recommend you check out one of our favorites:
Naches Peak Loop Trail (3.5 miles)

Olympic Peninsula
Nestled in the Pacific Northwest, the Olympic Peninsula is a breathtaking gem that offers enchanting beauty at every turn. Its diverse ecosystems and rugged landscapes make it the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. When exploring this region, we recommend you check out three areas: the mountains, the coast, and the towns along the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
You can explore the Olympic Mountains from the east, west, and north sides. If you only have time for one, we recommend heading to the north side and checking out Hurricane Ridge. This area has many fantastic trails: Hurricane Hill, Cirque Rim, Big Meadow Loop, and more.
The coast is also a unique and exciting destination on the Olympic Peninsula. We recommend checking out Kalaloch, as our private campsite exclusive for renters borders the vast Pacific Ocean. Head south to Westport if you’re looking for a busier town with activities like surfing.
On the north side of the Olympic Peninsula lies many quaint towns on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We recommend checking out Port Townsend, a Victorian-inspired destination with great shops, restaurants, and outdoor activities.
