Camping in the off-season lets you have a quiet, relaxing adventure away from the hustle and bustle. There are fewer crowds, it's easier to book a campsite, and accommodations are cheaper. The Pacific Northwest, particularly Oregon, has plenty of winter-friendly campsites to explore. From watching waves crash along the shore at Cape Blanco to wandering through snow-covered forests at LaPine State Park, you’re sure to have an incredible adventure camping in Oregon in the off-season.
Cape Blanco State Park
Situated at the far western tip of the state overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Cape Blanco State Park offers a slice of history. Accessible via several hiking trails, the beach allows for quiet walks with a view of the rolling waves. A short stroll up a private road leads to the Cape Blanco Lighthouse, a 154-year-old landmark that remains impressive even when its gift shop is closed between November and April.
Campsite reservations can be made up to six months in advance, providing a choice of 52 electrical sites with water and four cabins available for booking. Practical amenities like firewood for sale, flush toilets, and hot showers enhance the camping experience. For those interested in nearby activities, options include wildlife viewing, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, biking, and more.
Deschutes River State Recreation Area
Deschutes River State Recreation Area camping offers a laid-back experience in the heart of North/Central Oregon. Situated along the Deschutes River, the campground provides outdoor enthusiasts with a simple and comfortable setting. Well-maintained campsites, picnic areas, and basic amenities make it a practical choice for those looking to relax in a natural environment. The riverside location allows campers to enjoy fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. The campground's proximity to Deschutes National Forest makes it a convenient base for exploring the surrounding area.
Campsites can be booked up to six months in advance, but they are first-come, first-served in the winter. There are four loops, but only one open in the off-season: the A Loop. This section of the campground includes 34 electrical sites with water. Amenities are limited from November through March: the showers and flush toilets are turned off, but vault toilets and porta-potties remain open.
Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park
Nestled in the heart of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park beckons campers with its incredible blend of lush forests, expansive sand dunes, and pristine lakeshores. Given its location, there are endless outdoor recreation opportunities. This campground is located within the sand dunes, is two miles from the Pacific Ocean, and has two pristine lakes nearby. We highly recommend trying out sandboarding or renting a dune buggy for an awesome adventure.
Reservations for campsites can be made up to six months in advance, and during the off-season, online same-day reservations are typically readily available. Renowned as one of the state's largest campgrounds, it presents a diverse array of camping options, including 47 full-hookup sites, 121 electrical sites with water, 187 tent sites, 10 yurts, and designated areas for group tent camping. The campground boasts amenities such as flush toilets, hot showers, the option to purchase firewood, and additional conveniences to enhance the overall camping experience.
LaPine State Park
This campground is located in a scenic spot along the Upper Deschutes River, just 25 miles south of the city of Bend, Oregon. Immerse yourself in the serenity of this secluded camping spot, nestled within a high desert subalpine forest. The peaceful ambiance and the beauty of the surrounding landscape make LaPine State Park a perfect retreat for those seeking a peaceful and immersive outdoor experience in the heart of Oregon's wilderness.
This campground is particularly known for its winter recreation activities, such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, both available on the park’s trails. The park is open year-round for both camping and day use, but some sections are closed due to weather conditions. The south campground loop typically remains open throughout the winter season. Be sure to check online before departing on your trip to make sure the road is open.
Wallowa Lake State Park
Wallowa Lake State Park, located in northeastern Oregon, is a laid-back outdoor retreat. The park is centered around Wallowa Lake, surrounded by the scenic Wallowa Mountains. There are also hiking trails with pleasant views of the surrounding landscape. We highly recommend visiting this park in the winter. Activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing become popular, allowing visitors to explore the park's trails and enjoy the breathtaking views of the snow-covered Wallowa Mountains. The frozen lake can provide opportunities for ice fishing, and the crisp winter air enhances the sense of solitude and tranquillity.
Camping is open year-round, and this is the perfect time of year to avoid the crowds. This large campground features 121 full-hookup sites, 88 tent sites with water nearby, 2 yurts, and 3 group tent areas. The campground also features hot showers, picnic areas, flush toilets, a playground, and more.
Tumalo State Park
Camping at Tumalo State Park in the winter presents a refreshing outdoor experience. Nestled in the high desert region of Central Oregon, the park offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere during the colder months. With snow-covered landscapes and crisp winter air, Tumalo State Park provides a picturesque setting for camping, attracting those seeking a quieter trip. Be sure to take a stroll on the Deschutes River Trail while you’re camping here.
This campground is also open year-round, but some loops close due to weather, so consider this when booking. This campground includes 23 full-hookup sites, 54 tent sites, and 7 yurts. It is important to note that water is shut off to spigots in the winter. The property amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, firewood sales, and more.
